This volume exposes both the scientific basics and modern methods of high-energy spectroscopic astrophysics. The emphasis is on physical principles and observing methods rather than a discussion of particular classes of high-energy objects, but many examples and new results are included in the three chapters as well. The existence of branes and large extra dimensions could also be sources of modified gravity (e.g., KK gravity). There could exist short distance effects at scales of order the string scale ℓ s which are observable in cosmology or in high energy astrophysics. We shall also consider possible gravitational wave signals from string-cosmology models.

High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations.

It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, and hours (in quasars, X-ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts.
